What you should know if it's the first time you come to the Feria de Abril

This 2024, the Feria de Abril will start at 00:00 on Sunday 14th April, after the night of the pescaíto and the famous alumbrao. The week of festivities will not end until the night of Saturday 20th April, with the fireworks as the closing event.

The April Fair is one of the best known festivals in Spain, and the most popular in Seville. It began in 1847 as a livestock fair, but over the years it has evolved and today it has become an unmissable event for the people of Seville.

During the week that the fair takes place, the city of Seville only exists for the party. It is filled with colour, joy and, above all, flamenco passion.

Here are some tips you should know if this is the first time you come to the Feria de Abril.

How to get to the fair?

The Feria de Abril is located in the Los Remedios neighbourhood, and there are different ways to get there: by car , parking in one of the car parks set up for the fair, using transport services such as taxis or shuttle buses, and finally by metro(specifically the Plaza de Cuba and Parque de los Príncipes stops).

Night of Pescaíto

As we have said before, the April fair begins after the night of the pescaíto. On this night, the members of the stands get together to enjoy, as the name suggests, a night where the protagonist is the fried fish pescaíto .

One of the most important aspects of this night is the dress code, as it is forbidden to wear flamenco dresses. If you want to know how to dress on the night of the pescaíto we have prepared several options for your outfit.

The Alumbrao

For some, this is the most important moment of the Feria de Abril, when all the lights are switched on in the Real, and above all, the Portada comes to life. Here is a video showing last year's alumbrao :

La Portada

The Portada is the gateway to the Real, full of light and colour. Each façade is unique, as the design changes every year. In this case, the Italian Davide Gambini, was in charge of designing it. The inspiration comes from the representative Mudejar Pavilion of the María Luisa Park, designed by the architect Aníbal González. How to dress for the Feria de Abril?

For men, the dress code is very formal. As it is a traditional event, choosing a classic and elegant look ensures success.

In the case of opting for a suit, it is important not to neglect the accessories, such as the tie, the scarf, the belt... As they play an important role in the look.

It is true that the joy of the fair may encourage the use of daring combinations or prints, but at this time it is important to remember that it is a traditional event, and therefore experimenting with clothing is a delicate matter that can lead to being the centre of attention on several occasions.

In the case of women, the most common is the flamenco or gypsy costume. You can opt for a classic outfit or one inspired by the latest trends in flamenco fashion. But you should not only think about the outfit, you should also think about all the accessories that complete the outfit, from a matching shawl and its corresponding brooch to the choice of the perfect earrings.

Another option, usually used by those who are not regulars at the Feria de Abril, is to go with an elegant outfit, but with a flamenco touch. For example , wear a dress with a classic polka dot print, play with ruffles and fringes or add small flamenco accessories.

Find a Stand

For many , the Feria de Abril is considered a private event, as you have to be a member to access most of the stands, and in some cases the waiting list is endless. Even so, the fair has more than a thousand casetas, and some of them are open to the public, distributed among the 15 streets of the Feria. Here you can enjoy the atmosphere and magic of the Feria de Abril.

Rebujito

In case you still don't know, rebujito is the star drink of the Feria de Abril in Seville. It is a combination of manzanilla or fine wine, soda and a lot of ice. Usually, high temperatures make an appearance during the Feria de Abril, so it is important to have rebujito as an ally, as it is a very refreshing drink. But you also have to be careful with it, because sometimes it can be very treacherous.

Hell Street

Also known as the "cacharritos", this is a group of streets in the Real full of the classic mechanical rides that we find in a good fair. The Sevillians nickname this area the street of hell because of the great noise caused by the rides called "cacharritos". It could be considered an obligatory visit if you go to the Feria de Abril, the most important thing is not to forget to go up to the big Ferris wheel to enjoy the fair from the heights.
